Free Coaching Tool: Creative Visualization for Goal Setting
Quick Overview:
Clients create a clear, emotionally engaging picture of their desired outcome after coaching. This helps them identify what truly matters to them – and why.
Mentally Rehearse Success to Make It Real
What we can imagine, we can achieve. Studies show that vivid visualization can boost performance by up to 23%. The process is simple and effective:
You can use this exercise for yourself or integrate it into your client sessions. The method is straightforward, and the results are impressive.
Visualization and Reality – No Difference for the Brain
When we vividly imagine success, our brain activates the motor cortex – the area responsible for movement – as if we were actually performing the action. The brain cannot distinguish between real and imagined experiences.
Leverage this insight in your coaching. Especially at the start, encourage clients to picture their goals as concretely and vividly as possible.
Purpose of the Exercise
Clients describe, in as much detail and emotional depth as possible, the state they wish to achieve by the end of coaching.
Another key benefit:
Clients become aware of their underlying motivation – the “why” behind their goal. This awareness is crucial for fostering a lasting commitment, promoting accountability, and driving sustainable change.
Important: Writing is key
Clients must write down their vision for maximum impact. Writing fosters mindful and honest reflection, uncovering both conscious and subconscious thoughts and feelings.
Only through writing do vivid mental images form. These have the same effect on the brain as real experiences – leading to greater focus, commitment, and increased chances of success.
With CleverMemo, you provide clients with a secure space to write and share their reflections directly with you.
Step-by-Step Guide for Coaches
1. Allow 10–15 minutes of quiet time.
Have clients close their eyes briefly and imagine the coaching process is complete—and it was a full success. Use these prompts to guide their writing:
2. Picture Your Future Self:
- Where are you?
- What are you doing?
- How do you feel?
- Who is with you?
3. Describe Your Desired Outcome in Detail:
- What has changed?
- What can you do, think, feel, or experience differently now?
- What small or big differences do you notice?
4. Explore Your Motivations:
- Why is this outcome important to you?
- What does it mean for your life, relationships, or work?
- Which values or wishes are behind it?
- What do you gain from achieving it?
Tip:
Write everything in the present tense.
Example: “I wake up feeling energized and clear-minded. I’ve learned to set boundaries and trust my decisions.”
Additional Writing Prompts:
- At the end of coaching, I want…
- I am proud that…
